Abstract of John Brice's Presentation on Open Source, ALA Atlanta 2002

John Brice, Director of the Meadville Public Library, described how Open Source computers (including both Operating Systems and application programs) have been intergrated into the IT solutions of his library. MPL currently uses Open Source technology for web browsing thin clients, Internet filtering and routing, firewalls, web and e-mail servers, file and print servers, and as workstations for the staff. Mr. Brice has reported that some of the advantages of Open Source solutions are cost effectiveness, ability to determine own upgrade path, ability to use computers longer, reliability, and less problems with viruses. Mr. Brice further reported that there are also disadvantages to using Open Source including having someone trained in desktop Unix Operating Systems, and the transitioning costs of switching desktop interfaces. Overall MPL has found that the advantages of using Open Source far outweighed the disadvantages. More information and the actual programs and computer configurations can be found at meadvillelibrary.org/os.
